I’m not saying anything about parents in low-income areas. We know a considerable amount about how low-income students are taught. The focus is on rules without understanding, just like the instruction in the 1970s.
I do not assume anything has or needs to change. Perhaps you are focusing on a symptom and not the problem. The correlation between poor performance in school and the disintegration of the family in our society is also well chronicled, yet you are convinced the salvation lies at the feet of the partial products method.
There was once “overwhelming research” proving the world was flat and the center of the universe, am I to believe that as well?
Giving scenarios & incorporating math isn’t interesting to most: “if there are 7 fish in a pond & a bear ate….etc.” blah blah blah. Math should be taught like the Pythagoreans where the numbers have real meaning, students should be taught deeper & shown where they apply (not just balancing a check book), Math can actually be the middle ground between religion & science, an alternative to both yet just as amazing. because math IS religion & science.
I think the main problem is the way math is taught, it isn’t ‘connected’ to things of interest in children & adults. With children especially aspiring musicians math should part of ALL music classes from elementary through college. I didn’t even learn of the Golden Ratio till later in life, if math can be connected properly & taught alongside EVERY subject the U.S. & all countries would benefit. There is so much that rely on math in all arts & sciences. Math should be the #1 subject.
The problem of the lack of student reasoning in mathematics is well documented in the research, as is the disconnect when procedures are introduced without any connection to meaning. However, students can and should learn the traditional algorithm, building on their knowledge of partial product. In general, it would be helpful if students thought that mathematics involved reasoning and sense making. Will computer science continue to stay the same or should it change? I wonder if it should.
You assume your research is accurate, I do not. You preclude the possibility you could be wrong, I do not. I do not want to go with my “gut” or what we have always done, I want to do what was proven to work by the results, not the research.
This is a quote from one of your posts -
“This is especially true in low-income areas. ”
Perhaps you are becoming entangled in the web you have woven.
Don’t believe the overwhelming research in this area. The US instruction primarily continues just as it did in the 1970. Thus, we have generally poor international results. You seem to assume that math instruction has magically changed across the US, resulting in poor international performance. Visit some elementary classrooms. I’m in them all the time. Mathematics continues to be taught poorly, focusing on rules. Failing to believe research is strange, but I respect your right to do so.
